THE LANDSCAPE AND THE MEDIUM:
SUSAN WADWORTH'S PAINTED TRAVEL DIARIES AND A GROUP SHOW OF WORKS ON PAPER

The Windham Art Gallery is pleased to present Brittany Summers, New England Winters, an exhibit in the front gallery by April's Featured Artist, Susan Wadworth. Simultaneous with this show will be a group exhibit, in the back gallery, entitled Works on Paper featuring work by artist-members Tim Allen, Carolyn DiNicola-Fawley, Judy Hawkins, Cary Nelson and Marjorie Sayer. These exhibits run Friday, April 4-Sunday, April 27, with an opening reception on Friday, April 4, 5:00-8:00 PM during Gallery Walk.

Rindge, New Hampshire artist and Fitchburg State College professor, Susan Wadsworth, was inspired by a summer spent in Brittany with her family. Through simplicity of line and glowing layers of color, Wadsworth has created images of Ile d’Ouessant and Mont St. Michel, where she observed unusual seaweed patterns on the beaches, and also of Camaret-sur-Mer, where she was struck by the juxtaposition of the stunning seaside views and German pillboxes remaining from World War II. Returning from France, she became inspired by her family's wintertime activity: skiing. These images of New England winters range from the magic twilight of night skiing at Crotched to the frosty views of Sunapee and Stratton.

Works on Paper, will feature work by Tim Allen, known for his elegant and meticulous portrayal of trees, their various seasons and environs. For this exhibit, his work was created with oil paint on unprimed bristol board. By applying many layers of paint and then rubbing the surface with his fingers, his paintings appear to have a "permanent gloss, some colors becoming more glossy than others as they're burnished." Recent work by Marjorie Sayer, who is impassioned about exploring myriad ways to express the figure, will feature painting on paper as well as collages made with paper. For Sayer, paper gave her ever more opportunites to thoroughly explore her subject matter and medium; she found it, she says, "more immediate than canvas." Cary Nelson, whose landscapes are varied and carefully observed, will exhibit works on paper inspired by the colors and extraordinary shapes and forms naturally found in Banff, Canada, Jasper, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park--places she visited this past fall. Works on paper by Judy Hawkins and Carolyn DiNicola-Fawley will also be featured in this exhibit.
